About

Julia Whalen holds a Master of Arts in Health Humanities from University College London and an undergraduate Master of Arts (Honours) in International Relations and Comparative Literature from the University of St Andrews. Her research includes a published study on LGBTQ+ representation in YA literature, and her graduate thesis examined ecological anxiety in contemporary culture, work that informs her understanding of the issues young people are engaging with today.

Her background spans both publishing, research and education. As an editorial assistant at Simon & Schuster in New York, she evaluated manuscripts and contributed to content strategy for young readers. Previously, as a bookseller and children’s and educational buyer, she partnered with schools and teachers to build age-appropriate, engaging collections and to coordinate author events. This experience gave her direct insight into how educators select materials, what classrooms need, and what resonates with students.

Julia brings this perspective to her work as an educational consultant, guiding students and families through course and program selection. She takes the time to understand each student’s strengths, interests, and goals, as well as how they think and learn, and uses that understanding to recommend courses and programs that fit them well. Her insight into how schools and educators evaluate and choose materials helps her match students with the right academic pathways, while her writing expertise lets her support the work students produce along the way, strengthening its clarity, structure, and impact while preserving their individual voice. She believes strong outcomes grow out of confidence as much as craft, and she works to build both in every student she supports.

Outside of work, Julia is an avid runner, baker, and reader, and loves enjoying all the natural beauty that Vancouver and BC have to offer.
