Summer Programs

Stay sharp with summer boot camps and workshops at Options! From essay writing practice and math instruction to standardized test prep and post-secondary applications, our summer programs have something for every student.

The Pre-Calculus boot camps address all the Ministry Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Pre-Calculus. The courses are preparatory and not for credit. Materials provided during the session, including course notes, assignments, homework, and a final exam, will function as resources for students during the week, as well as resources students can use during the school year. To get the maximum benefit from these courses, it is recommended that students study at least one hour outside of class for every hour spent in class.

The session will include a presentation that outlines the university application essay genre and provides brainstorming, research, and writing tips. An interactive simulation will provide students with an understanding of how admissions decisions are made and better prepare them for their own writing tasks. Students will also be given time to brainstorm ideas and engage in practice writing exercises while Options Solutions writing coaches provide one-on-one feedback and guidance.

This course prepares university-bound students for the challenges of writing for different disciplines at the post- secondary level. The course will discuss strategies for successful research and writing in the university’s core areas of study: arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences, and business. It will also feature a review of grammar essentials and provide opportunities for essay writing practice. Materials will be provided.

This two-day intensive preparation will help students understand and tackle the Canadian admissions process. The goal of this boot camp is to relieve the stress students feel about the application process and to get a head start before going back to school. Some materials will be provided, but please bring a laptop to each session.

Join us for a 4-hour exam, exam marking (including customized essay marking), and a 3-hour debrief. Each student is given a cover sheet to help them understand their successes and identify their areas needing improvement. In order to get an accurate estimate of a student’s abilities, we use only officially released ACT and SAT exams. Taking practice tests helps students prepare for the stamina required on test day.

This session focuses on preparing students for post-secondary success from an academic and non-academic perspective. This workshop introduces the student to the fundamental concepts introduced in grade 11 physics, including vectors, kinematics, dynamics, momentum, energy, waves, sound light and relativity. Students will be well-prepared for grade 11 physics with an overview of fundamental concepts and equations that will be used throughout the year.

Calculus 12 is a required course for many science, engineering and commerce programs across Canada. The Calculus 12 workshop provides an overview of functions, limits, and differential and integral calculus that allows students to approach the school year with confidence. Concepts in Calculus 12 can sometimes take a longer time to understand, so this boot camp allows students to avoid feeling overwhelmed at the start of the school year. The instructor works to explain the origins of calculus and to simplify material, demonstrating its relationship to real-world topics.

This interactive, fast-paced workshop is aimed at providing students with the theory and practice to succeed in their English studies at the grade 11 and 12 level. It will give students the skills and confidence they need to succeed, making their future English courses easier and more enjoyable. Furthermore, the active reading, planning, and essay writing skills are a great way to prepare for the Graduate Literacy Assessment (GLA), a new provincial exam for students in grade 10 and 12.

Pencils at the ready! Get a headstart on your upcoming high school English courses with these reading and writing intensive boot camps. These courses will teach reading strategies and different types of essay writing through lots of hands-on practice.

The session will include a presentation that outlines the main components of video interview requirements, as well as a practical guide for successfully completing those videos. During the session, students will learn how to answer typical interview questions and have the opportunity to tackle some sample questions as a group. They will then practice in pairs and give each other feedback, as well as record their responses for analysis. Programs that require the video interview include commerce at UBC, the University of Toronto, and York University, as well as engineering at the University of Toronto and Waterloo.

The Young Entrepreneur Summer Workshop is a week-long boot camp that will introduce you to the tools and exercises that entrepreneurs use to turn their vision into reality. You’ll learn about entrepreneurship, design thinking, how to validate if people are interested in your idea, and much more. Fall Programs

Fall is our favourite season here at Options, but it’s also a busy one! Get ready to head back to school, practice your writing, and get a jump on your supplemental essays with our slate of fall workshops.

These intensive study skills sessions are designed to help students be academically prepared for their educational futures. The sessions are instructional as well as practical, hands-on work sessions, and they are offered at the start of the school term to help students get a start on forming solid executive functioning habits. Students will leave the workshop armed with the knowledge, skills, strategies, and reference material required to prepare them for academic success. They will also leave the workshop with a concrete understanding of their own executive functioning strengths and weaknesses and with an individualized plan to help them develop as a student.

The session will include a presentation that outlines the typical essay and supplemental writing prompts required by major Canadian universities and programs (e.g. UBC, Queen’s, Western). During this presentation, session leaders will also provide writing and time management strategies and sample essays from previous years’ successful applications. Students will then be given time to brainstorm and engage in practice writing exercises. Options Solutions writing coaches will give students one-on-one feedback on their drafts, and all students will leave with a clear direction on how to tackle and complete their application essays.

Writing Workshop serves as an accessible introduction to university-level writing, and students will leave the sessions with an understanding of effective written language use. This two-hour workshop is designed to help grade 10 and 11students and their parents prepare for 2020-2021 course planning. Options Solutions president Melinda Giampietro will walk students through the process of course selection. The session will be interactive and dynamic. There will be a course simulation and also a thorough question and answer period. Students will leave with a clearer understanding of university requirements and what courses they need for post-secondary school admission.

This three-day boot camp is designed to give current grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 students a solid understanding of English grammar, writing conventions, and essay basics, so they can approach essay writing with the knowledge and skills necessary for success. Students will learn the essentials to writing expert argumentative essays, the most common essay genre they will write in high school. This session will be a great way to hone students’ writing skills while classes transition to an online model. Materials will be provided.

Ever feel like your studying isn’t paying off? Options Solutions wants to help students learn to study smarter. Whether you are studying for an upcoming test, final exams, Provincial exams or AP exams, this session covers all the skills you will need for successful studying and exam writing. Two hours of the session will be devoted to a presentation on general study skills, and the remaining hour will offer specific guidance to help students prepare for one exam of their choice. This ongoing prep series is designed to give current grade 10 students a solid understanding of active reading, writing conventions, and essay fundamentals so they can approach their Graduation Literacy Assessment (GLA) with knowledge and skill. The workshops will be run by Options Solutions writing coaches. With many years of experience, Options teachers ensure that students understand the higher-level reading and writing skills that will prepare them for the Graduation Literacy Assessment and help them succeed in high school and beyond. Options doesn’t just teach “testtaking tricks” like other test prep organizations. Instead, students receive a strong grounding in how the test works and strategies for attaining a high score, combined with an opportunity to increase their overall academic performance.

This three-hour session aims to support students in their applications and interviews for jobs, co-op placements, and internships, with an emphasis on interview skills and effective resume writing. The presentation will cover all the steps of the job search, including the resume and cover letter. The session will include a presentation that outlines the main components of successful interviews, such as body language and appearance, coping strategies for nerves, and common questions and strategies for answering them. During the session, students will have the opportunity to tackle some sample interview questions as a group and practice recording their responses in a supportive environment. Students will also be given time to work on their personal resumes, with feedback from a consultant and a writing coach.
