How to Make the Most of Your Campus Visits

on

Visiting university and college campuses can be one of the most fun parts of your post-secondary research process, and if you’re lucky enough to visit the institutions you’re seriously considering, it can be integral to your decision-making. Check out how to make the most of these campus visits below!

Plan Early

It’s often recommended that students visit campuses in the spring of grade 11 or the summer before grade 12 (as in right now!). We have to agree: these are the best times for students to check out potential colleges and universities since the busyness of grade 12 hasn’t kicked into high gear just yet.

When planning your visits, don’t forget to think about how you’ll make them all possible. Maybe you have the time to visit two or three campuses in person, but don’t forget that many schools are still offering virtual tours, so take advantage of these if you can’t see all your schools in person.

Take the Tour

On that note, sign up for the tours your schools offer, and don’t forget to find out if you need to pre-register! Often these tours are run by students and will highlight some of each institution’s best features. These are an excellent time to ask questions (so come prepared) and get to hear a real student’s perspective.

While you’re walking around, take note of how the campus feels –is it busy and bustling or more low-key– and check out bulletin boards and flyers to see what kind of events have been planned.

Venture out on your own

While we think taking the official campus tour is essential, we also recommend taking some time to venture out and do some exploring of your own. Go find the dining hall and student centre, stop into some of the different academic departments, and check out the library or gym.

Once you’ve seen all there is to see on campus, go get a feel for the surrounding area. Do you want to live in a busy metropolis or are you interested in a more laidback or rural feel? You’ll want to make sure that both the post-secondary institution and the local community are good fits for you.

Take notes

Don’t forget to take lots of notes about your visits. Not only will it be helpful to have these notes to look back on, but they’ll be great information to share with your educational consultant and can help with decision-making.
