Bachelor of Science in Animal Health (University of Alberta, Edmonton)

Students with a passion for animals who are interested in pursuing a range of careers in animal health are well-suited for the University of Alberta’s Bachelor of Science in Animal Health.

Not only will students gain an understanding of the biology and behaviour of large animals or companion animals, but they’ll also discover the link between animal health and the safety of the food chain. Issues faced by the animal health sector, the food production industry and the government will also be examined. Majors are available in the areas of companion and performance animals, food animals and food safety and quality. A capstone course is also required.

Students will have many opportunities for hands-on learning experiences in this program. The ALES Mini Internship Program allows students to work on real-world projects that will prepare them for careers in agriculture, life, and environmental sciences. Twice yearly, during the fall and winter reading weeks, the program matches students with specific organizations within the industry for visits, presentations, and volunteer opportunities. Students can also gain experience in the dairy industry by volunteering with the Hands on a Holstein program.

Course examples include Principles of Animal Agriculture, Animal Health and Disease, Animal Welfare and Principles of Animal Genetics.

Graduates have found meaningful careers in the following positions:

  • Animal welfare officer
  • Animal nutritionist
  • Food safety & quality assurance advisor
  • Production specialist
  • Pharmaceutical researcher
  • Commodity inspector
  • Policy analyst
  • Animal shelter director
  • Animal behaviour consultant
  • Animal/pet sector sales & marketing manager
  • Geneticist
  • Veterinarian

Also of note, students interested in travel abroad and veterinary studies can engage in a partnership between the University of Alberta and the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. Students who have successfully completed three years of study in a U of A BSc program can enter the accelerated 4-year BVM&S Program. This enables a student to graduate with an internationally accredited veterinary degree in a combined 7 years and receive qualifications from both universities.
