Grade 12 and Grade 11 To Do List – May

on

May is a milestone month in the post-secondary planning process. For grade 12 students, it’s a time to lock in final decisions and begin preparing for the transition to university. For grade 11s, May is about building momentum and taking early steps that will make the application process next year feel much more manageable. While priorities differ by year, staying organized and intentional now can make a meaningful difference in the months ahead. At Options, our educational consultants recommend the following focus areas for May.

For Grade 12 Students

For grade 12s, May is about finalizing decisions and beginning the transition to post-secondary life. With deadlines approaching, it’s important to stay organized and confident as you take these next steps.

1. Accept offers and pay the deposit

Most universities require students to accept their offers of admission and submit their deposits by early May. Review your options carefully, ensure you understand the acceptance process for your chosen school, and complete all the required steps before the deadline. If you’re still deciding between offers, check out our decision-making blog series or check in with your educational consultant, who can help you weigh your options and feel confident in your final choice.

2. Begin post-secondary course selection

Some institutions begin sharing information about course selection or registration in May. Take time to review course options, understand degree requirements, and familiarize yourself with how the process works. Getting an early start will help reduce stress when registration officially opens.

3. Begin residence applications and research residence options

If you plan to live on campus, May is an important time to complete residence and explore your options. Review different residence styles, financial considerations, application deadlines, and preferences carefully. It’s important to plan our housing early to ensure you secure a space that aligns with your needs and preferences.

4. Connect with accessibility services, if necessary

If you require academic accommodations and support, the spring is the perfect time to begin connecting with accessibility services at your chosen institution. This may involve gathering and submitting documentation or meeting with an advisor. Beginning this process now allows time for everything to be reviewed and arranged well before classes begin.

5. Join admitted student communities and begin connecting with classmates

Many universities offer online communities for incoming students. Joining these spaces can help you meet future classmates, ask questions, and begin building a sense of community before even stepping foot on campus. Even a few early connections can make the transition to university feel more familiar.

For Grade 11 Students

For grade 11 students, May is a time to take more intentional steps toward the application process. While deadlines are still a year away, beginning early preparation now can make grade 12 feel significantly less overwhelming.

1. Review second-semester progress

As the school year begins to wind down, take time to reflect on how your second semester is going. Look at your current grades, workload, and study habits, and consider whether any adjustments could help you finish strong. Small changes now can still make a meaningful difference in your final results.

2. Begin early brainstorming for application essays

While it may feel early, this is a great time to start thinking about potential essay topics. Reflect on the experiences that have shaped you, challenges you’ve worked through, or interests you’ve developed. Consider joining us for Intro to Canadian Supplement Writing Workshop to kickstart your application essays.

3. Begin reviewing application requirements

Start exploring what different programs require beyond grades, such as supplemental essays, interviews, portfolios, or specific prerequisites. Getting familiar with these expectations now helps you avoid surprises and gives you more time to prepare where needed.

4. Audit extracurriculars and continue to look for ways to fill gaps

Take a closer look at your current activities and consider what they say about your interests and strengths. You may want to deepen your involvement, pursue additional opportunities, or explore something new. The goal is to build experiences that feel meaningful and genuine to you, rather than simply adding more.

5. Finalize summer plans

With summer approaching, this is the time to confirm how you’ll be spending it. Whether it’s a job, volunteer role, program, or personal project, having a clear plan helps you make the most of your opportunities. Thoughtful use of your summer can support both personal growth and future applications.
