Meet the Team: Rosie Salas

on

This month, we sat down with Rosie Salas, one of our writing coaches, to learn more about her role at Options.

Tell me a bit about your background.

I completed my BA in Philosophy from Thomas Aquinas College in MA, USA. With a great passion for the English Language, I spent my years of university, as well as my free time now, studying Latin and the etymology of English words as well as the art of Rhetoric and philosophical reasoning. These areas of study have given me a unique set of skills which help me support and coach students as they meet challenges on their individual writing journeys. I have spent the last few years teaching after-school programs in writing, English grammar, and comprehension, as well as teaching English as a second language to a diverse range of students. I truly care about supporting and understanding each student’s goals and academic dreams, and I hope to encourage confidence and a passion for writing in students in order to help them reach those goals.

What do you spend too much time doing?

I am an avid knitter, and I enjoy sitting down with a good podcast, a cup of tea, and a new knitting project to work on. After spending too much time on it, I just finished my first sweater of the year!

If you could teach a university course, what would it be?

If I could teach a university course, I would love to teach about the etymology of English words and the origin of the English Language. While at university, some fellow classmates and I started a Latin discourse group where we read, translated, and discussed Latin texts. I found this very enjoyable since I love studying Latin and the strong influence it has on English, and to teach this in university would be quite the experience.

Which well-known person or fictional character would be your ideal roommate?

I love the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and coming from a family with sisters, I can really appreciate the sisterly dynamic portrayed in the book. Out of all the sisters, I am most drawn to being roommates with Amy March. Amy is quite creative, and I think I would enjoy working on artistic projects together, but honestly, I’m sure any of the sisters would be ideal roommates.

What’s your go-to productivity trick?

My go-to productivity trick is to give myself a set time to do something before moving on. When I know something will only take a short time, sometimes I try to push it off, but I find that if I set a certain time to get it done, I’ll usually get through it. Plus, I have the motivation to finish it before my time is up, so I don’t need to work on it again!
