Bachelor of Arts & Science in Health Studies – Mount Allison University, Sackville, NB
For students interested in preparing for careers in the healthcare field but who also want to study at one of Canada’s smaller, undergraduate-focused universities, Mount Allison’s new Health Studies program offers that unique opportunity. Interdisciplinarity is built into this program, providing students with a Bachelor of Arts and Science, and it can be taken as a major, honours, or minor program.
The program provides the opportunity to engage with health from biological, behavioural, social, environmental, ethical, historical, cultural and population perspectives. Mount Allison’s small size and consistent Maclean’s #1 ranking as Canada’s top undergraduate university means that students not only learn from, but are mentored by faculty with research participation to develop the critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills to tackle issues such as:
- Healthcare for an aging population
- Confronting global pandemics
- Building healthy communities
- Working for justice in healthcare delivery and outcomes
Within the program, students can concentrate in one of the following areas:
- Health Equity and Diversity – with courses across the humanities and social sciences from Environmental Studies and Women & Gender Studies to History, Philosophy, and Sociology
- Health Analysis – building data analysis skills in courses from Mathematics and Data Science to Economics and Geographic Information Systems
- Environment and Health – studying the impacts of the natural and built environments on human and animal health with courses from biology and biochemistry to environmental studies and philosophy

Admission into this program requires 4 academic grade 12 courses, including: English 12, Precalculus 12, and 1 Science 12 strongly recommended (can be: Anatomy & Physiology 12, Chemistry 12, Physics 12, Geology 12, or Environmental Science 12), making this an ideal option for students to study in both the arts and the sciences with lighter high school science requirements.
Graduates of the program are well prepared to be community leaders on issues of health and well-being, poised to start work or graduate studies in many different fields, including: medicine, health promotion, public health and policy, health law, advocacy and non-profit social justice work, global health and international development, occupational therapy, social, and counselling.
Mt. Allison University has 2300 students, most of whom are undergraduates, with 95% of those students living in campus residence or very near campus, creating a unique and powerful community with a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio.
