Options Alumni: Megan Southam

on

We have so many stellar Options alumni, and in our new series, we wanted to shine a light on a few of our past clients who have gone on to do great things both near and far. This month, we chatted with Megan about what she’s been up to since she graduated and her advice for current post-secondary students.

What’s your name?

Megan Southam

Where and what did you study?

University of Georgia in Athens, GA- Bachelor of Science in Education, Exercise and Sport Science (2015)

Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX- Master of Business Administration (2018)

How did you choose this institution and program?

I wanted to combine academics with my passion for riding horses. I also wanted to move to the US for undergrad. I was recruited to ride on Georgia’s Division 1 Equestrian Team and committed to the program during the winter of my senior year after my official visit to campus. I fell in love with the southern charm, great academics, and top-tier equestrian team. As for the specific program, I always loved learning about human movement and science. At Georgia, you had to take various core classes your first three semesters and then apply to get into your major so I had time to learn about a few majors before ultimately deciding to pursue Exercise and Sport Science.

What would you tell current post-secondary students about finding a path?

My advice to current post-secondary students would be to be open to saying “yes” to different kinds of opportunities. If you keep saying “yes” then you may be surprised at where those “yeses” take you. My high school self would be very surprised with where I am now but I am very grateful for where my “yeses” have taken me.

What are you doing now?

I am a professional equestrian. I train show-jumping horses, as well as, coach junior and amateur riders. I love that I get to spend time with animals every day and share my knowledge with other passionate equestrians.

What at Options Solutions helped you the most?

Melinda! She was so encouraging and gave me the confidence to pursue my dream of going away to college. She had all of the knowledge and resources for the SAT, the NCAA Eligibility Center, and the application process for American universities.

A fun fact about you?

I always loved bulldogs so it was fitting that Georgia’s mascot is a bulldog and now I own my own bulldog! A French Bulldog named Matilda.

We help you navigate the complex post-secondary selection process in Canada, the United States, the UK and abroad.
