We have so many stellar Options alumni, and in our new series, we wanted to shine a light on a few of our past clients who have gone on to do great things both near and far. This month, we chatted with Greer about what she’s been up to since she graduated and her advice for current post-secondary students.

What’s your name?
Greer Ross-McLennan
Where and what did you study?
I studied English Literature at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
How did you choose this institution and program?
I’ve been in love with Scotland from the time I took a trip there when I was ten — I always vowed that I would return one day to live there. I chose St Andrews to be situated in that magical, historical environment, but I was also really interested in the small class sizes and tutorial-focused learning.
I actually entered into my first year studying international relations, but I changed my major to English as it was what I enjoyed more (plus, getting to read the works of Scottish poets in the same place they studied 600 years prior was pretty awesome!)

What would you tell current post-secondary students about finding a path?
I would say that focusing on what skills you enjoy developing is far more important than having a set industry or career path in mind. What makes you tick — problem-solving? Building things? Design? Talking to people? Book publishers have engineering jobs and investment banks have HR roles — there is something for your skillset in every industry, so do some research.
Would your high school self be surprised with where you ended up?
My high school self definitely thought I would go into diplomacy or become a filmmaker — two paths I would honestly still consider today!
What are you doing now?
I’m working in a people-focused role in the video games industry at SEGA in London!
What at Options Solutions helped you the most?
I would say one of the most helpful things I experienced with Options Solutions was that my worldview was broadened and my eyes were opened to not only different degrees but how those varied degrees can lead to so many different paths. I knew a STEM degree wasn’t for me, but I didn’t really know what career paths there were besides law. I genuinely learned about so many industries that I was suited for, and I felt a lot more confident entering university and even after graduating when looking for a job!

A fun fact about you?
I had a very short-lived high school athletic career in javelin.
