Each year, Options Solutions team members visit many, many post-secondary institutions. These visits allow us to learn beyond what is readily available on the internet and in print materials. While on campus, we often meet with admission staff and Options alumni who attend the institution. We love learning about the nuance and vibe of each place and about all the hidden opportunities that exist there.
Our Options on Tour series highlights some of our recent adventures and shares them with you. We’ll feature what we saw, who we met, and what neat things/hidden nuggets we learned.
Skidmore College – Saratoga Springs, New York
Last spring, Melinda visited Skidmore College. Read her highlights below.
The Basics
- Skidmore College is a private liberal arts college located in Saratoga Springs, New York, and was founded in 1903.
- The college enrolls approximately 2,700 undergraduate students and focuses primarily on undergraduate education.
- Skidmore’s small size contributes to an 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio and emphasizes close interaction between students and professors.
- Students can choose from more than 40 majors and a wide range of minors spanning the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.
- Campus life is active, with more than 100 student clubs and organizations as well as NCAA Division III athletics.

Interesting Facts
- Skidmore was originally founded as the Young Women’s Industrial Club before evolving into today’s nationally recognized liberal arts college.
- The college’s motto, “Creative Thought Matters,” reflects its longstanding emphasis on innovation and interdisciplinary learning across all fields of study.
- Skidmore’s mascot is the Thoroughbred, a nod to Saratoga Springs’ deep connection to horse racing and the nearby Saratoga Race Course.
- The campus is home to the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, where students can engage with rotating exhibitions of contemporary and historical art as part of their educational experience.
- Students can borrow original works of art by famous artists for their dorm rooms. Each year, the Room•Mate program allows students to check out pieces from the Tang Teaching Museum’s collection, including works by artists like Picasso, Dalí, and Matisse, to display in their residence halls.
