Before beginning the application process for entry into a post-secondary institution, there is background work that should be done first. For example, you should expect to spend considerable time, effort and research choosing the appropriate PSI for you and becoming well-aware of the costs involved. Having said that, nothing is more important than what you put on the application itself. Admission’s Officers are looking very specifically for information that will set yours apart from the thousands of others they receive. Here are a few tips to that end:
Be Thorough and Accurate
Never leave anything out on your application. Make sure you answer every question completely and thoroughly. Getting your application submitted in a timely manner is ideal, but not at the expense of accuracy. Do not work to crisis! Start early enough to allow yourself the time required to fully answer all questions. Do it right, the first time, rather than making several inadequate attempts. All you will succeed in doing is adding more time to an already time consuming procedure.
Spend Considerable Time on Your Essay
If there is an essay component of your application, then it will be, by far, the most important element of the process once you have met the minimum entry GPA. Build in sufficient time to complete this part of your application. There are no short-cuts! Develop a detailed outline, gather appropriate resources and ensure that you have a solid thesis. Once your initial draft has been completed, proofread and edit it. Use spell-check! If possible, have someone else look it over for you. You should expect to repeat this process many times over in order to ensure a competitive end result. Your essay will be judged on content, writing style and sophisticated use of language, both in terms of vocabulary and structure.
Emphasize Your Good Qualities
Focus on your strengths, but if you are also asked to address your weaknesses, spin your response in a positive direction. This is not to suggest that you be less than honest. Rather, it is about language choice. It states the obvious to say that you should emphasize your strong qualities – as well as your accomplishments and achievements – but it is of equal significance to acknowledge the challenges you’ve faced and identify what you’ve done to meet them. This indicates self-awareness and growth. Its how you’ve handled obstacles and adversity that will contribute well to your application. Remember, language is of critical importance!
