SAT Math: Tips for Algebra I problems

on

SAT Math algebraic problems involving inequalities, word problems, exponentials, roots and factoring can pose a challenge so how you approach your steps to solving the questions can truly drive up your score. The following quick tips will help you tackle each type of basic algebraic questions:

1) Inequalities

With these types of questions, identify the side of the ‘greater than’ symbol (<) or ‘less than’ symbol (>) equations that the variable(s) is located. Solve the equation as you would for a normal algebraic equation with the ‘equal’ sign (=) by isolating the variable to get the upper and lower values. Finally, replace the greater and less than symbols to get the range of values for the variable.

2) Word problems

Translate the word problem into an algebraic equation. First, make sure that the numbers and operations are converted correctly so you have a clear equation representing the problem. Next, identify the variable for which you need to solve. If you have more than one variable to solve for, first solve the letter variable with the information you are given and then plug the number into the second equation to solve the final variable. Occasionally, you can solve two equations by combining them.

3) Exponentials

Know your rules for your exponents. When multiplying, add the exponents. When dividing, subtract the exponents. Leave the base the same as it is. If you have a negative exponent, convert the value to 1 / the base with the positive value of the exponent (in the denominator position or take its reciprocal value).

4) Roots

With roots, aim to get rid of the root value by squaring both sides of the equations. Beware of working with brackets from inside out to ensure all the numbers and variables are correctly squared.

5) Factorials

When factoring polynomials, think of ‘distribution in reverse’. To do this, you can check your factoring by distributing or using FOIL to ensure that the result correctly represents the original expression.

The above key points and approaches to algebraic problems will help you approach these types of questions better.
