Bachelor of Midwifery – University of British Columbia (Vancouver, British Columbia)
Interested in working in a healthcare setting where you can build strong and lasting relationships with your patients, have a career you can take around the world, and be on the front lines of building a just and more equitable society? All while bringing babies into the world? A bachelor’s degree in midwifery can lead to working as a practicing midwife or continuing with research and education aimed at improving the quality of care for new mothers and babies locally and globally.
UBC’s Bachelor of Midwifery degree (BMw) prepares graduates to perform essential midwifery skills and to complete the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination to work in the field. The program started in 2002, and its clinical component provides opportunities to learn in urban and rural healthcare settings across the province as well as abroad, thanks to UBC’s clinical care and research relationships with practitioners in Nepal and Uganda. There is even a component for Vancouver Island students to engage with the UBC courses online while working in and building connections with Vancouver Island communities.

At UBC, the program accepts only 20 students per year, giving strong preference to BC applicants. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for the program only after completing 1 full year of post-secondary study, and there is an interview process.
So, if delivering babies in a low-risk setting is something that interests you, consider this exciting career or keep it in mind as you start your post-secondary journey.
