Camp Ignite: Greater Vancouver Area

For students interested in hands-on learning and exploring non-traditional career paths, Camp Ignite offers a focused introduction to firefighting. Delivered in partnership with local fire departments across Metro Vancouver, this multi-day program provides young women with direct exposure to firefighting, teamwork, and physical training in a structured and supportive environment.

Program Overview

Camp Ignite is a three-day, two-night camp running August 7–9, 2026, hosted across various fire departments and training facilities in the Lower Mainland. The program is open to students who:

  • Identify as female
  • Are between the ages of 15 and 18
  • Are in Grade 11 or 12
  • Are Canadian citizens residing in British Columbia

The camp introduces participants to the fundamentals of firefighting while also incorporating fitness, health, and team-based activities.

What Students Will Learn

Participants rotate through a range of practical, skills-based sessions that reflect real training in the fire service. These include:

  • Basic fire suppression techniques
  • Use of personal protective equipment
  • Fire ground practices and terminology
  • Apparatus and equipment training
  • CPR and fire extinguisher training

Students are also introduced to specialized areas within firefighting, such as:

  • Auto-extrication
  • Hazardous materials operations
  • Technical rope rescue
  • Emergency medical response

The goal is to provide a broad understanding of the field and highlight the variety of roles available within the profession.

A Focus on Teamwork and Physical Training

In addition to technical skills, Camp Ignite places a strong emphasis on teamwork and communication. Participants take part in group challenges and physical activities, including fitness sessions, climbing, and outdoor training. These experiences are designed to reflect the collaborative and physically demanding nature of the fire service.

Mentorship and Real-World Exposure

A key part of the program is the opportunity to learn from women currently working in the fire service. Firefighters from across British Columbia volunteer their time to mentor participants, share their experiences, and provide insight into career pathways.

Campers also train in real fire halls and use professional equipment, offering a practical understanding of what the job involves on a day-to-day basis.

Cost and Accessibility

Camp Ignite is a not-for-profit program that aims to remain accessible to students across the province. Many participants receive partial or full sponsorship from their local fire departments, and additional scholarships may be available through the Fire Chiefs’ Association of British Columbia.
