Each year, Options Solutions team members visit many, many post-secondary institutions. These visits allow us to learn beyond what is readily available on the internet and in print materials. While on campus, we often meet with admission staff and Options alumni who attend the institution. We love learning about the nuance and vibe of each place and about all the hidden opportunities that exist there.
Our Options on Tour series highlights some of our recent adventures and shares them with you. We’ll feature what we saw, who we met, and what neat things/hidden nuggets we learned.
Laval University – Quebec City, Quebec

The Basics
- Laval University is a public research university in Quebec City, Quebec, with roots dating back to 1663 and its official founding as a university in 1852.
- More than 47,000 students attend Laval, including over 33,000 undergraduates.
- It is one of the largest French-language universities in North America and offers hundreds of programs across 17 faculties and schools.
- Students can participate in a vibrant campus community with hundreds of student associations, clubs, and the nationally recognized Rouge et Or athletic program.

- Laval traces its roots to the Séminaire de Québec, founded in 1663, and is recognized as the first French-language university in North America.
- The university’s Rouge et Or football team is one of the most successful programs in Canadian university sports history.
- Laval’s campus features one of the largest university libraries in Québec, with millions of documents available to students and researchers.
- The campus contains an underground tunnel network that allows students to travel between many buildings without going outside during Québec’s harsh winters.
- The university has its own experimental forest, the Montmorency Forest, one of the largest university-managed teaching and research forests in the world.
