Don’t stop reading just yet! If you, like many students, cringe at the word “accounting”, please give me two minutes of your time. First, it’s important to know that when you choose accounting as your specialization, you will take six-seven courses, which prepare you to enter the Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) program.
Here are just some of the benefits of studying accounting:
- You’ll get hired immediately. All accounting firms, large and small, hire multiple new graduates every year. As a new recruit, you will study for the CPA exam (two years) and get paid while gaining valuable work experience. Some of the large firms hire over 50 new grads a year! That means a young, dynamic work environment.
- You’ll always be in demand. Every sector, private or public, requires accountants. Whether the economy is in good or bad shape, you’ll always have a job. In addition, once you’ve received your CPA you can move into different positions:
- Finance Manager
- Financial and Investment Advisor
- Business Analyst
- You will have international opportunities. Accounting practices don’t vary much from country to country. Many of the big firms have offices in multiple countries and encourage secondment to gain international experience.
- You’ll have great opportunities for career advances or changes. Majoring in accounting doesn’t mean you have to become an accountant. This specialization can lead you to many career options such as market research, management, media and finance. In addition, studies show that people who have passed the CPA exam have a high pass rate on the Bar Exam to become a lawyer.
