This year, the University of Warwick is offering a unique competition for all Grade 10 and 11 students with a passion for Global Sustainable Development. This is an exciting opportunity for students to think creatively and gain valuable research skills as they learn more about global sustainable development.
The competition was established to engage with talented school students and to give insight into the type of thought-provoking issues involved in studying GSD at Warwick. Over the years, the University of Warwick has expanded the types of entries that can be submitted to include videos, podcasts, and poetry, as well as more traditional essay responses. This is in line with the university’s overall aim to engage with students from a variety of different backgrounds and interests, giving them the chance to present their unique perspectives on issues of global sustainable development. This also aligns with Warwick’s pedagogical approach, as we are aware that, for some of these “big problems,” we need creative responses.
How to Enter:
To enter, students must respond to one of the following questions:
- Do you need to be rich in order to be sustainable?
- Some commentators believe that 2022 could be the year the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end. What long-lasting impacts do you think the pandemic might have on sustainable development?
- What do you think is the main barrier to achieving sustainable development at present, and how can this be overcome?
Responses can be in any of the following formats:
- A 1,000-1,500 word essay;
- A four-minute video or podcast essay;
- A photo or a series of photos and a 500 word (maximum) commentary; or
- An artistic exploration (for example, painting, poetry, short story, short film, etc.) and a 500 word (maximum) commentary
Details:
Students can enter as an individual or as a group, and they must obtain support from a teacher (and include contact details within their submission). Shortlisted entrants will be invited to a virtual event, hosted by Warwick’s GSD faculty and students. Winners will be announced at the event and awarded prizes.
The deadline for competition submissions is Friday, April 29, 2022 at 19:00 ET / 18:00 CT / 17:00 MT / 16:00 PT
Further information is available at the Competition Information. Please send any questions to GlobalSustainableDev@warwick.ac.uk and the GSD department will be happy to help. Good luck!
