Connecting With Your Campus – How to Get Involved In Your First Year

on

You’ve probably already heard that you’ll have plenty of things to keep you busy outside of class once you get to university. However, finding the right activity for you can be tricky (and sometimes a little overwhelming) when faced with an endless list of possibilities – but don’t worry, we’ve got your back! Here are six ideas to get you out of bed watching Netflix and into your new campus life!

Join or Start a Club

Are you passionate about a social issue such as climate change or human rights? Do you want to learn how to play quidditch? Or maybe strike up a conversation with some new friends about sports cars on the weekends? Your campus probably has the club for you! And, if it doesn’t, why not start one yourself? Universities typically hold some sort of club day in September, so get out there and see what suits your fancy!

Become a Tutor

If you excel at a certain subject like math or science, put your skills to work and volunteer to be a tutor! Many campus libraries hire volunteer tutors to help other students struggling with their classes. By signing up to be a tutor, you can meet new people, develop your leadership skills, and, if you’re lucky, maybe even get paid!

Write / Publish for the School Paper

Regardless of what you’re studying in school, being able to write well will always put you one step ahead of the game. Hone in on your abilities while delving into the nuts and bolts of campus life by joining the student newspaper! There is often a vast array of opportunities on the team behind the paper, including researchers, editors, and more. Plus, writing for the student newspaper is a great thing to have on your resume – and interviewers will love it!

Attend Campus Events

As we slowly return to normal life and away from the pandemic, there will start to be an increase in campus-wide events again. From sports games to trivia nights to dog therapy – there are tons of events held at each and every school that are sure to pique your interest. Go with some friends or make new ones there!

Participate in Research

Depending on what classes you will be taking, this one might already be mandatory for you – but if it isn’t, why not get involved in some research? Being a lab rat can open you up to new experiences, stimulate your intellectual curiosity, and greatly strengthen your critical thinking and problem-solving skills!

Join Student Government

Interested in politics? Join the student government! By being a part of the student government, you will have a deeper insight into matters that affect the school, and you will be able to voice your opinion on how those matters should be handled. You’ll gain leadership skills, make connections with a diverse body of students and be able to demonstrate that you participated in central decision-making activities!

Starting your university life is filled with a plethora of wonderful new opportunities. No matter where your interests lie, you will never find yourself short of things to do!
