October is an important month for grade 12 students. Classes are in full swing, applications are opening, and scholarship deadlines are closer than you think. Staying organized now will save stress later. Here are five tasks we recommend adding to your to do list this month:
1. Begin applications
Most Canadian universities open their applications in October. Your deadlines might feel far off, but getting started now gives you breathing room to gather your documents, ask for references, and work through each step without rushing.
Application portals can also be confusing, and small mistakes are easy to make. At Options, we help students find their way through the portals, avoid the common slip-ups, and build a timeline that actually fits their schedule. Contact us to book a session with one of our experienced educational consultants, or save your spot in one of our Application Workshops.

2. Check in on your grades and communicate with teachers
By October, you’ve got a pretty good feel for how your courses are going. It’s a great time to look at where you stand, adjust your goals if you need to, and talk to your teachers about how you’re doing or where you could use some help. Keep in mind that some of these teachers might end up writing your references, so building positive relationships early is important.
3. Review essay, video interview, and portfolio requirements
Many programs ask for more than just transcripts. Supplemental essays, video interviews, and portfolios are common, and they usually take more time than students expect. October is a good moment to check what each school is asking for and build time into your schedule to prepare your supplementals. Our writing coaches can help you brainstorm ideas, give feedback as you work through your drafts, and share insight into what each university is looking for.
4. Note early scholarships and make a scholarship plan
Scholarship season starts earlier than most students realize. Many major awards have fall deadlines, and missing them can leave thousands of dollars on the table. This month, make a list of any awards that you qualify for and map out your application strategy and timeline.

5. Attend virtual university open houses and events
Fall is a busy time for university open houses, info sessions, and faculty-specific events. These sessions are a great way to learn more about programs, ask questions, and connect with admissions teams. Whether in person or online, Options encourages students to attend as many as possible.
October is all about getting things moving: starting your applications, keeping your grades on track, and building some momentum. Tackle these five tasks and you’ll head into the busy months ahead feeling a lot more prepared. And remember, the Options team is here to help every step of the way.
