Dreamed of flying planes, but not sure how to get started? Want to work toward a pilot license while completing a bachelor’s degree and experiencing university campus life? Two unique Canadian aviation programs allow students to accomplish all of this and are well worth checking out.
Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Geography and Aviation with Commercial Pilot Licence (University of Waterloo, Waterloo)
The program incorporates courses in geography, environmental studies, and aviation, including communications, computer programming, data analysis, and GIS systems to give students the tools not only to pilot planes but to appreciate and understand the geography below them. The program partners with the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre, where students log over 200 hours of flying time and attain multi-engine and multi-instrument ratings.
Required courses for admissions include English 12 and any Gr. 12 Math (Foundations of Math or Precalc). All admitted students will need to pass a Transport Canada Category 1 Medical Certification before starting the program.
Waterloo also offers a Science and Aviation program for students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree. In addition to general science and aviation courses, this program also incorporates cartography, climatology, geographic information systems, aerodynamics, and remote sensing.
Students in these programs describe solo Cessna flights around the region, learning to maintain their aircraft, and taking family members aboard, among the program highlights. Strong support from faculty and advisors ensures students stay on track. Please note that these programs DO NOT have a co-op option.

Aviation (Mount Allison University, Sackville)
Mount Allison University affords students the opportunity to earn their pilot’s license while being immersed in a small, tight-knit university community focused on the undergraduate experience. Students in this program can pair aviation with arts, science, or commerce degrees.
After spending their first year studying at Mt. Allison, students start flight training in their second year at MFC Training, just 25 minutes from campus, and take ground school classes at Mt. Allison. The aviation component of the program is very similar to Waterloo’s flight program above, including over 200 hours of flight time, a commercial pilot license, and multi-engine class and Group 1 instrument rating.
