Schoolhouse: Remote
For students looking for a meaningful extracurricular activity that combines academics, leadership, and service, Schoolhouse offers the perfect option. Founded in 2020 by Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, Schoolhouse began with a simple idea: students can help other students learn.
Since its founding, Schoolhouse has grown into a global nonprofit with more than 174,000 students across 180 countries. Through free, live online tutoring sessions, students connect with peers around the world to strengthen their academic skills, prepare for standardized tests, and build confidence in a supportive learning environment.
Schoolhouse offers support in a range of academic and enrichment areas, including
- High school math
- SAT preparation
- Homework help
- College admissions workshops
- Dialogue-based discussions on current topics
Students can tutor in one or more approved subject areas once certified.
Why High School Students Choose to Tutor
For many students, Schoolhouse is both a service opportunity and a way to continue developing academically. Tutors often choose the platform because it allows them to
- Volunteer their time in a meaningful, accessible way
- Track service hours for university applications
- Build leadership, communication, and organization skills
- Reinforce their own understanding of academic material
- Connect with students from different countries and backgrounds
- Gain experience teaching and guiding others.
Because sessions are virtual, students can participate from home and choose schedules that fit around school, sports, and other commitments.
How to Become a Tutor
Students do not need previous teaching or tutoring experience to get involved. Schoolhouse is built on the belief that students can be effective tutors when given the right training and support. Tutors must be at least 13 years old.
1. Get Certified
Students first complete certification in the subjects they would like to tutor. This may involve
- A Schoolhouse or Khan Academy assessment
- Submission of AP scores (4 or 5 where applicable)
- SAT scores of 700+ in relevant sections for SAT tutoring
2. Complete Tutor Training
Once accepted, tutors complete self-paced training modules focused on running safe, effective tutoring sessions.
3. Join the Community
Tutors gain access to Schoolhouse’s online tutor network, where they can ask questions, receive guidance, and connect with experienced volunteers.
4. Host Sessions
Tutors choose their own schedule and publish sessions based on their availability. Students can tutor once a month or much more frequently.
Why this Opportunity Stands Out
Schoolhouse is a particularly strong extracurricular for students interested in education, STEM, leadership, or community impact. It demonstrates initiative, consistency, and the ability to communicate clearly, qualities valued by universities and future employers. It also offers the chance to contribute on a global scale while building practical skills from home.
