Bachelor of Arts (Education); Education in Global Contexts – McGill University, Montreal
For students who are passionate about social change, community impact, and solving real-world problems, McGill University’s Bachelor of Arts (Education), Major in Education in Global Contexts offers an innovative undergraduate pathway. This interdisciplinary program is designed for students who want to apply the principles of teaching, learning, and leadership outside of traditional classrooms, in sectors such as non-profit organizations, government, advocacy, business, and international development.
Rather than preparing students for conventional school-based teaching roles, this degree explores how education can be used to strengthen communities, support organizations, and respond to complex global challenges. It’s important to note that this program does not lead to teacher certification for formal elementary or secondary classroom teaching in Quebec. Students interested in becoming certified teachers should explore McGill’s teacher education pathways separately.
Education Beyond the School System
Education plays a central role in shaping societies, but it happens in many more places than just classrooms. McGill’s Education in Global Contexts major examines the growing landscape of organizational development and learning in contemporary global environments.
Students build a strong foundation in educational theory while developing an understanding of key issues affecting diverse communities around the world. Coursework draws from multiple disciplines, helping students explore education through the lenses of
- Sociology

- Leadership Studies
- History
- Philosophy
- Public Policy
This broad academic foundation prepares graduates to think critically about how education can support equity, innovation, and positive social change.
Hands-On Learning Through Internships
One of the defining features of the program is a semester-long internship completed after second year. Students work with a McGill advisor to help arrange placements aligned with their interests and career goals, allowing them to gain meaningful professional experience while building valuable networks.
Internship opportunities may take place in local or international settings and can include community organizations, advocacy groups, social enterprises, educational initiatives, and government agencies.
The combination of academic study and practical learning allows students to graduate with the academic foundation and real-world experience they’ll need for the future.
