Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws – SFU, Burnaby, BC and the University of Exeter, Exeter, UK

Ready to fast-track your path to becoming a lawyer? Simon Fraser University (SFU) and the University of Exeter in the UK have partnered to offer British Columbia’s first Accelerated Law Dual Degree Program, allowing students to earn two degrees in just six years: a Bachelor of Arts from SFU and a Bachelor of Laws from Exeter.

Traditional law pathways can take seven years or more, but this innovative program combines academic excellence, practical legal training, and international experience to help you enter the legal profession sooner, without needing to take the LSAT.

Program Overview

Students begin their studies at SFU, building a strong academic foundation in the arts and social sciences before transitioning to the University of Exeter’s Law School for three years of specialized legal education. The program concludes with a final year back at SFU, where students complete their remaining coursework, including the Certificate in Foundations of Canadian Law, and prepare for National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) exams to become certified to practice in Canada.

Throughout the program, students benefit from personalized advising, workshops, and exclusive program events, as well as a dedicated student space on campus. Support from both universities ensures a smooth transition between institutions and a rewarding international experience.

Program Advantages

  • Earn Two Degrees in Six Years: Complete both a BA from SFU and an LLB from Exeter, saving time and tuition.
  • No LSAT Required: Receive automatic admission to Exeter Law School if you meet SFU academic and program criteria.
  • Study in Two Countries: Build a global perspective by studying in both Canada and the UK, with a 20% tuition discount at Exeter.
  • Wide Range of Majors: Choose from 16 participating BA programs, including Political Science, Criminology, Psychology, and International Studies.
  • Practice in Canada: The LLB designation is common in Commonwealth countries such as the UK and is officially recognized in Canada upon successful completion of the NCA exams, allowing students to practice law in Canada.
  • Professional Experience: Participate in mooting, pro bono work, study tours, and employability events with Canadian alumni during your time at Exeter.

Pathway to Legal Practice

The SFU–Exeter Accelerated Law Program bridges two world-class legal systems—England and Wales, and Canada. Students develop a strong understanding of common law, advocacy, and professional ethics while gaining a comparative international perspective that’s increasingly valued in global legal practice.

Admissions & Next Steps

The first cohort begins Fall 2026, with applications open from October 1, 2025 to January 31, 2026.
High school students applying to SFU can select a participating Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) major and indicate their interest in the SFU–Exeter Accelerated Law Program directly on their application. Admission is competitive, and while academic excellence is key, no LSAT or supplementary materials are required.
