BC Wildlife Federation’s Conservation Stewardship Workshops: Vancouver, BC

Looking for a meaningful way to explore your interest in the environment? The BC Wildlife Federation’s Conservation Stewardship Workshops are a hands-on opportunity for students and community members to deepen their understanding of local ecosystems and gain practical skills that can make a real impact.

Offered through the BCWF’s Wetlands Education Program (WEP) and Fish Habitat Restoration and Education Program (FHREP), these workshops provide environmental education across British Columbia. Whether you’re passionate about sustainability, curious about biology, or exploring potential pathways in environmental science, these workshops are a valuable introduction to ecological restoration and conservation work. Many workshops are open to high school students who are eager to get involved. No prior experience is necessary, just an interest in nature, science, or community action.

Workshops typically combine classroom instruction with fieldwork and cover topics such as:

  • Wetland classification and mapping
  • Ecological monitoring techniques
  • Restoration planning
  • Fish habitat assessment and riparian health

In addition to gaining new knowledge, students will leave with tangible skills and a better understanding of how conservation efforts impact the community.

Spotlight: Upcoming Workshops

Sparrowhawk Beaver Co-Existence Workshop | June 29

Join us for a hands-on beaver coexistence workshop focused on enhancing wetlands while supporting habitat for Northern Leopard Frog. Discover the ecological role of beavers in hydrology, wetland formation, and biodiversity enhancement, and learn strategies for mitigating human–beaver conflict.

Participants will gain practical experience in beaver co-existence techniques while supporting the installation of a pond leveller–a practical, non-lethal water management tool that allows beavers and people to coexist while maintaining valuable wetland habitat.  The workshop will include site assessment considerations, pond leveller design principles, installation methods, maintenance requirements, and a discussion of amphibian habitat objectives within managed wetland systems.

This workshop was undertaken with the financial support of Wildlife Habitat Canada, the Government of BC, FWCP Columbia, and the Wilder Institute.

Wetlandkeepers | July 11–12

Presented through the Wetlands Education Program, this free two-day workshop introduces participants to the ecological importance of wetlands and equips them with the skills to help protect them. This workshop will cover topics such as:

  • Wetland plant identification
  • Soil sampling
  • Wetland classification
  • Tools and software for ecological monitoring

Participants will take part in both fieldwork and classroom instruction and receive a Wetlandkeepers Certificate upon completion. Past participants have used the skills they learned to contribute to local restoration projects and pursue further study in environmental science.

For students interested in ecology, biology, sustainability, or hands-on learning, BCWF’s Conservation Stewardship Workshops offer a unique and valuable experience. These programs not only build knowledge and skills, but they also empower the next generation to play an active role in protecting B.C.’s natural environment.
