Introducing our Winter Workshops

on

Winter break is almost here! And that means it’s time to start thinking about how to use it productively. Every break we host different writing workshops to help students finish applications or learn new skills, and this year is no different. Better yet, throughout January and February, we’re running our brand new Casper Prep workshop and our ever-popular Course Planning 101 workshop. Get all the details below!

Writing for Applications Workshop

This writing workshop allows students to work on the written portions of their US, UK, and Canadian applications (and scholarship applications, too!) in a constructive and supportive environment. Students are able to receive assistance in all parts of the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, editing, and finalizing their work. We accommodate students working on a variety of projects all in the same session, and our writing coaches work personally with students on their unique pieces.

What do our students have to say?

“I enjoyed how the teacher was always there and very responsive to any questions I had. They were informative and helped me through my writer’s block.”

Essay Essentials Boot Camp

This three-day boot camp is designed to give current grade 8, 9, and 10 students a solid understanding of English grammar, writing conventions, and essay basics, so they can approach essay writing with the knowledge and skills necessary for success. Students will learn the essentials of writing expert argumentative essays, the most common essay genre they will write in high school. This session will be a great way to hone students’ writing skills. Furthermore, the active reading, planning, and essay writing skills are a great way to prepare for the Graduate Literacy Assessment (GLA), a new provincial exam for students in grades 10 and 12.

What do our students have to say?

“I like that we did daily grammar lessons over the three days and that every day we did a little part of “how to write an argumentative essay”. That was awesome because we weren’t expected to learn essay writing in 3 hours. It was a good mix and match over the three days.”

Casper Prep Workshop

This two-hour session prepares students for the typed response section and the video response section of the Casper exam. During the session, students will review theformat of the CASPer exam and determine the qualities that schools are looking for in their responses. They will then practice both written and verbal responses and be given feedback regarding their responses.

Course Planning 101

This two-hour workshop is designed to help grade 10 and 11 students and their parents prepare for 2023-2024 course planning. Options Solutions president Melinda Giampietro will walk students through the process of course selection. The session will be interactive and dynamic. There will be a thorough question-and-answer period. Students will leave with a clearer understanding of university requirements and what courses they need for post-secondary school admission.
