The start of the 2020/2021 school year may be different from previous years, but there are some things that haven’t changed – like the requirement of submitting standardized test scores as part of a US university application. Considering US schools? Here’s what you need to know about the ACT exam.
What is the ACT exam?
The ACT is a standardized test that measures what you learn in high school and your academic readiness for university. The exam covers English, math, reading, science and has an optional writing section. Many US universities require an ACT exam (or SAT exam) score as part of a student’s application.
Why take the ACT exam?
Although both the ACT exam and SAT exam are accepted equally by US schools, most of our students find that they excel on the ACT exam because it tests content that’s more closely aligned with what’s taught in the BC curriculum. However, taking either or both tests also have the following benefits.
Keep your options open
Even if you haven’t made a final decision to apply to any US schools, taking the exam during your grade 11 year – when the subject matter is fresh in your mind – will give you the best option of having a strong test score in hand. And while many US schools have gone “test-optional,” several competitive schools still require a standardized test score.
Test scores help you stand out
A strong test score is an asset to your application – even at test-optional schools. Even if a test score isn’t required for an application, doing well on the exam will demonstrate your university readiness. And some schools even use standardized test scores to determine eligibility for merit-based scholarships.
Show what you’ve learned
You’ve spent hours reading textbooks, studying languages, and learning math concepts. The ACT exam is the perfect opportunity to showcase all the knowledge you’ve acquired! Even if you ultimately choose not to submit your scores or attend a US school, the process of preparing for the ACT exam will equip you for future exams.
