If you’re thinking about starting ACT or SAT exam prep, we recommend you first take the ACT/SAT Exploration Exams.
What’s the Process
Students are emailed one ACT exam packet and one SAT packet, and they are instructed to complete both. The purpose of taking both exams at the beginning of prep is to determine which test the student is likely to score better on.
How does Taking the Exploration Exam Help?

We will compare student scores on each and give a recommendation on which test to take. This will help students focus their prep work sooner.
While the core skills necessary to succeed on both exams are the same, the SAT and the ACT have different formats, emphasize different areas of knowledge, and test slightly different skills. For example, the SAT Reading section (as of Spring 2023) provides many short reading passages while the ACT provides four longer reading passages. The ACT has a Science section, while the SAT does not. It is important for students to know which exam is better suited to their skill set.
In addition, taking two tests gives Writing Coaches more data on a student’s strengths and weaknesses in each section. This is extremely helpful when prep begins.
And of course, more practice never hurts!
