Virtual Classroom Conduct

on

It’s likely that most university-bound students will have at least one online class next semester. With that being said, it’s time to think about how you might conduct yourself in these online classrooms (whether synchronous or asynchronous), so that you can get your first semester off to a great start.

Change your Mindset

The first step is to try to change your thinking about online learning. No, it won’t be perfect, but this time, we’re all a bit more prepared for online classes and have a bit more experience with this format. Try to see this as an opportunity to challenge yourself, learn a new skill set, or develop skills you already possess. Think ahead about potential obstacles and have a plan to overcome them, and remember that you have support available to you–you’re not going through this alone.

Change your Behaviour

Next, think about how you conduct yourself in the classroom. Now is not the time to be the student dozing in the back row, even if there is no such thing as a back row anymore. Show your instructors that you’re engaged in their lessons, that you’re organized, on time, and prepared.

  1. Check course material and syllabi before you get to class–know what’s being discussed each day and how you can contribute.
  2. Arrive early to your synchronous classes and be ready to start when the instructor is.
  3. Raise your hand, nod your head, ask a question, and engage with your instructors.
  4. Take notes. Take notes like your semester depends on it.
  5. Write down things you need to do on a sticky-note list, a whiteboard, or a planner–whatever works for you.
  6. Go to digital office hours and study sessions. Don’t hide behind your screen; instead, make yourself known to your instructors and classmates.
  7. Set a time in your day to do homework, read class material, and study. Write this down on your class schedule to help you stick to it.
