Core Test Skills Workshop
These intensive sessions focus on helping students master the ACT or SAT exam. Topics will cover every portion of the test, including test-taking strategies, time management tips, and crossover skills for the ACT/SAT exam. Materials will be provided. Test prep at Options is unique because it combines test preparation with the teaching of fundamental academic skills. With many years of experience, Options instructors ensure that students understand the higher-level reading, writing, and math skills that will prepare them for the ACT and SAT but will also help them succeed in high school and beyond. This workshop will run daily from Dec 27 – Dec 30, 10am-1pm online.
Essay Essentials Workshop
This three-day boot camp is designed to give current grade 8, 9, and 10 students a solid understanding of English grammar, writing conventions, and essay basics, so they can approach essay writing with the knowledge and skills necessary for success. Students will learn the essentials to writing expert argumentative essays, which is the most common essay genre they will write in high school. This workshop will run daily from Dec 27 – Dec 29, 10am-1pm online.
Writing for Applications Workshop
This writing workshop allows students to work on the written portions of their US, UK, and Canadian applications (and scholarship applications, too!) in a constructive and supportive environment. Students are able to receive assistance in all parts of the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, editing and finalizing their work. We accommodate students working on a variety of projects all in the same session, and our writing coaches work personally with students on their unique pieces. This workshop will be held on Dec 28 from 9am-12pm online.
Video Interview Workshop
The session will include a presentation that outlines the main components of video interview requirements, as well as a practical guide for successfully completing those videos. During the session, students will learn how to answer typical interview questions and have the opportunity to tackle some sample questions as a group. They will then practice in pairs and give each other feedback, as well as record their responses for analysis.
Programs that require the video interview include Commerce at UBC, the University of Toronto, and York University, as well as Engineering at the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo. This workshop will be held on Dec 29 from 10am-1pm online.
GLA 12 and English Studies 12 Boot Camp
This workshop is designed to give current grade 12 students a solid understanding of active reading, writing conventions, and essay fundamentals so they can approach their Graduation Literacy Assessment (GLA) with knowledge and skill. Students will have opportunities to do hands-on practice and receive incisive feedback from the instructor. This course is a super-refresher for students who have second semester English.
If UBC is on your list of applications, this workshop is for you! British Columbia high school students, who receive a UBC offer of admission, will be required to demonstrate a “proficient” level of performance on the Grade 12 Literacy Assessment to maintain their offer of admission. This boot camp will run daily from Dec 27 – Dec 30, 2pm-4pm online.
