Are you a high school student who enjoys all things STEM AND sharing your knowledge with elementary-aged kids? Why not join the High School Volunteer Program at Steamoji and do just that!
The High School Volunteer Program at Steamoji Kerrisdale offers local high school students the opportunity to gain valuable and meaningful work experience in a caring, engaging and fun STEM makers academy for kids. Volunteers will support academy facilitators in delivering our hands-on, future-facing curriculum while fostering a safe and positive learning environment for young learners.
Options for Volunteers:
If you can commit to a set schedule, Steamoji Kerrisdale offers:
Regular sessions: Volunteers will provide support during peak times, usually from 3:15 pm to 5:15 pm Monday to Friday (best suited for students from Magee Secondary & Point Grey Secondary who can easily get to the academy by 3:15 pm) and 10 am to 12 pm or 1 pm to 3 pm on Saturdays & Sundays (open to all local high school students).
If you are available during the summer, volunteer with Steamoji Kerrisdale’s:
Summer Camps: Volunteers will provide support for a specific weeklong camp (Monday to Friday), typically 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Who is eligible to volunteer at Steamoji?
Ideally, you’re in Grade 10, 11, or 12, have strong interpersonal skills, communication skills, and a “can-do” attitude. Students are ideally interested in STEM fields, education, working with kids or serving the community. Any experience with kids is an asset. Volunteers must live or go to school near the academy. Having been part of a WEX program is a bonus, but not required.

What benefits do students receive from volunteering?
- Valuable Work Experience: Gain exposure to teaching, mentoring, and supporting the delivery of STEM education in a real-world setting.
- Work in a STEM Academy: Learn and use fun technology like 3D printing, robotics, laser cutting, drones, etc.
- Be a Role Model: Inspire the next generation of makers, builders, and inventors.
- Build Your Resume: Gain a “Certificate of Completion” and a reference contact. Benefit from mentorship and manager feedback to help build your resume and access future opportunities.
All Steamoji volunteers receive ongoing support throughout their time at the centre. They also receive recognition for their efforts and an award at the end of their volunteering experience with the centre.
How long are volunteerships with Steamoji?
A complete volunteership will meet the following criteria:
- Regular Sessions: Minimum of 3-month duration with at least 30 volunteer hours
- Camps: Minimum of 1 camp (5 consecutive days).
