Options on Tour – Camosun College

on

Each year, Options Solutions team members visit many, many post-secondary institutions. These visits allow us to learn beyond what is readily available on the internet and in print materials. While on campus, we often meet with admission staff and Options alumni who attend the institution. We love learning about the nuance and vibe of each place and about all the hidden opportunities that exist there.

Our Options on Tour series highlights some of our recent adventures and shares them with you. We’ll feature what we saw, who we met, and what neat things/hidden nuggets we learned.

Camosun College – Saanich, British Columbia

Earlier this week, I visited Camosun College Lansdowne Campus, located just 15 minutes from Victoria’s downtown core. As I toured the library, study rooms, and support centre, I was struck by the bright and spacious buildings. I was also impressed with how welcoming the staff and faculty were, eager to answer all of my group’s questions and provide more insight into specific programs.

The Basics

  • Camosun has two campuses: Lansdowne and Interurban (located in Saanich)
  • The college offers 160+ fields of study
  • The large majority of programs include experiential education, such as co-ops or applied learning.
  • With just over 14,000 students every year, the typical class size is 24:1 (students to faculty)

Highlights

While at Camosun, I was lucky to participate in a separate tour of the dental hygiene building. Students can pursue a 2-year Dental Hygiene Diploma or the Dental Hygiene Bachelor of Science.

Entry to the Dental Hygiene program is in second year. In their first year of studies, students take a range of courses in chemistry, physics, biology and psychology. Second year and beyond sees students engaging in clinical practice, learning from dental faculty, and participating in research. In particular, what resonated with me was the learning opportunities available through Camosun’s Certified Dental Assistant Public Clinic. Oral examinations and x-rays are provided by Certified Dental Assistant students and Dental Hygienists to members of the general public at a reduced rate, making a necessary service affordable. I wasn’t surprised by this opportunity because what really resonated with me throughout my tour was Camosun’s emphasis on accessibility and equity for their students, staff, and the public.
