On October 6, 2021, Options Solutions’ Educational Consultants attended the Virtual CUE (Canadian University Events) Counsellor Event. It is one of our favourite Options traditions of the year. Our Educational Consultants listened to presentations from 57 Canadian post-secondary institutions. Below, we have highlighted some of the exciting new programs introduced for fall of 2022.

New Programs

Quebec

Bishop’s University has introduced a new minor in Musical Theatre.

Ontario

New at Brescia University College is the Food Management and Marketing module in their Management and Organizational Studies faculty.

Brock University has launched a new Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice program.

Western University is offering a new Honours Specialization in Data Science; new major in Climate Change and Society; new Creative Arts & Production Program (pending Senate approval in September) that will be jointly offered between Media, Information, and Technoculture (MIT), Music, and Arts and Humanities. 

The University of Guelph Bachelor of Arts program has added the following: a major in Sexualities, Genders and Social Change; a major in Creative Writing; a minor in Black Canadian Studies; and a minor in Linguistics.

Ontario Tech University introduced a BSc Honours in Integrated Mathematics and Computer Science; a Comprehensive Engineering Specialization in Affective Science and Mental Health; an Honours BA in Psychology; BSc Honours in the Psychology Specialization in Developmental Psychological Science; BA Honours in Psychology; and a BSc Honours program in Psychology. The University of Waterloo has introduced its new Sustainability and Financial Management program. Through this one-of-a-kind program, you’ll master accounting and financial management at Waterloo’s world-class School of Accounting and Finance and study sustainability in Canada’s biggest Faculty of Environment. Plus, you’ll get up to 16 months of co-op experience. In the Climate and Environmental Change program, you can gain deep scientific knowledge in climate change, master practical tools like computer modeling, and hone the skills to build a low-carbon future. You’ll combine classroom learning with hands-on experience in labs and fieldwork – and paid work experience through the co-op program.

York University offers its new BA in Cities, Regions & Planning! Students enrolled in this program will examine and analyze how cities and regions can be planned in more just and sustainable ways through three specialization areas: Urban Worlds, Urban Planning & Politics, and Urban Political Ecology.

British Columbia

At Capilano University, new majors include Kinesiology and Arts with a major in Psychology. New minors include Business Administration, Communication Studies, and Interdisciplinary Studies.

At the University of the Fraser Valley, new majors and programs include a specialization in Active Health, a Bachelor of Kinesiology; a major and minor in International Business; a major and minor in Indigenous Studies; and a major in Graphic and Digital Design.

The University of Northern British Columbia is now offering three Engineering degrees. They continue to offer a joint degree with UBC in Environmental Engineering. Students can also choose a UNBC-only Environmental Engineering degree as well as Civil Engineering. 

Nova Scotia

At Dalhousie University, a Co-Op program has been introduced for the Environment, Sustainability and Society program.

New programs at Saint Francis Xavier University include Applied Forensic Psychology, Public Policy and Governance, and Climate and Environment.

Newfoundland and Labrador

At Memorial University of Newfoundland, there is a new international Bachelor of Arts program, which encourages students to gain global experience and develop international perspectives. Students declare an arts major, complete language and international studies courses, and spend a semester studying or working abroad. There are also new majors available in Ocean Sciences (General or Environmental Systems) and Marine Biology, programs which are complemented by Memorial’s location and facilities.

New Brunswick

Mount Allison University is introducing many new programs this year. New majors include Health Studies; Women & Gender Studies; Geocomputing; and Visual and Material Culture Studies. New minors include Community-Engaged Learning; Data Science; Screen Studies and Popular Culture; Museum and Curatorial Studies; and International Politics. New certificate programs include Social Research Methodologies; Foundations of Health; Data Management; Data Analytics; Community Engaged Learning; and Theatre Arts. Certificates can be taken concurrently with degrees.
