Meet the Team: Mari Choi

on

This month, we sat down with Mari Choi, one of our writing coaches, to learn more about her role at Options.

Tell me a bit about your background.

I got my BA and MA in English literature from the University of British Columbia, with my research and study focused on wrangling with Renaissance epics. As such, curating words and stories is at the center of my craft. Working with students to tackle the English language, whether in fiction or non-fiction, has served as much of my pre- and post- graduation mission and purpose. At Options Solutions, I meet with students at all stages of the supplementary writing process to help them curate their own stories, providing an individualized toolset and coaching to get students where they need and want to go.

When not trying to decipher Old English or tackle bizarre references to the supernatural in Renaissance poetry, I enjoy tactile hobbies like crocheting, painting, and baking an inordinate number of sweets.

What makes you most excited about working at Options?

Even though the application process is often stressful and taxing, it really represents the start of developing a student’s voice and figuring out what is important to them for their future. Being a part of that journey, no matter where exactly in that journey any given student is, is always exciting!

What do you spend too much time doing?

Trying to teach myself new hobbies. There’s nothing more satisfying than figuring out a difficult skill or trick. I’m currently knee-deep in teaching myself how to crochet, and it’s been proven to be a great tactile hobby to unwind.

If you could teach a university course, what would it be?

Shakespeare isn’t Dead: Bad decisions and moral dilemmas that transcend time.

What is your favourite snack?

Celery and peanut butter is a go-to for me. It’s easy, quick, and filling. Although it sounds like a vile combination of foods, you’d be surprised how delicious fibrous peanut butter tastes!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I tend to like foods I don’t usually like when they’re in liquid form. For example, I hate mangoes (they taste hairy, yuck), but I love mango juice. Spinach and kale are my mortal enemies, but I love a good green juice. Bananas make me feel sick, but I’ll gladly make a strawberry banana smoothie.

What’s your go-to productivity trick?

Pavlov was definitely onto something when he was talking about classical conditioning. Rewarding hard work with something that brings you joy and happiness is never a bad idea.
