Communicating effectively is one of the most important skills for success in school and in the work place, yet many students feel that mastery is out of their reach. Time and time again, our Writing Coaches hear students making the same complaints:
“My writing’s too vague!”
“Punctuation is confusing.”
“I’m having trouble creating a thesis statement.”
“I’m just not good at expressing my ideas.”
We’re here to help! Banish this confusion for good with English Essentials, a series of workshops designed to demystify the writing process, clarify the fundamental concepts of effective writing, and tackle the most prevalent writing issues. Each of the five interactive sessions – which run from February to June – will be devoted to a particular topic. Students can come to one or two workshops, or better yet, sign up for the whole series, as each session will build upon the others. The series will run at all three of our office locations so if students can’t make the session at their home office, they can attend the same session at another one of our office locations.
We started the series in February with Punctuation 101, which our students loved. Mastering the punctuation fundamentals was their first step to better writing. Next up is Tricky Language. Is it “who” or “whom”? “I” or “me”? “Than” or “then”? The English language has its fair share of tricky spots, areas where even native speakers regularly misstep. This session will cover misplaced and dangling modifiers, pronoun usage, and commonly confused words. Through interactive games and exercises, students will learn handy rules that will guide their writing and help them navigate around these linguistic obstacles with skill.
