How to Prepare for Post-Secondary

on

While there may not be a perfect roadmap to prepare you for how to start post-secondary schooling in the middle of a pandemic, there are still several steps you can take to feel confident beginning a new school year.

Read, read, read

Your post-secondary coursework will likely require you to complete quite a bit more reading than your high school coursework. Use the next few weeks to read as much as possible; the more you read, the more prepared you’ll be to tackle your reading list for the fall.

Hone your time management skills

Staying on top of academic, social, and extracurricular demands can be challenging. First-year is when you want to establish solid time management skills, so whether you use an app, a planner or a combination of organizational systems, find a schedule that works for you and stick with it.

Attend a first-year orientation event

Find out what type of events your school is hosting – be it virtual or on-campus with social distance measures in place – and join in! You’ll have a chance to connect with other students who are beginning their post-secondary journey and get the inside scoop on what you need to know about your new school from students who’ve been in your position before.

Know where to find help

The transition from high school to post-secondary is a big change – and it’s okay to ask for help along the way. Research the resources available at your school for academic help, peer-to-peer mentorship, and mental health support. Identify people in your life you can reach out to help keep you accountable and who can offer moral support when you need some extra motivation.
