Grade 12 To Do List – October

on

October is an important month for grade 12 students. Classes are in full swing, applications are opening, and scholarship deadlines are closer than you think. Staying organized now will save stress later. Here are five key tasks we recommend students focus on this month:

1. Begin applications

Most Canadian universities open their applications this month. Even if your final deadlines aren’t until late, starting early gives you time to gather documents, request references, and work through each step carefully. At Options, we help students navigate these application portals, avoid common mistakes, and create a timeline that works. Contact us to book in with one of our experienced educational consultants or secure your spot in one of our Application Workshops.

2. Check in on your grades and communicate with teachers

By October, you have a good sense of how your courses are going. Take time to review your progress, update your goals, and connect with your teachers for feedback or support. Your teachers may also be providing references for you, so building positive relationships early is important.

3. Review essay, video interview, and portfolio requirements

Many programs ask for more than just transcripts. Supplemental essay, video interviews, and portfolios are common and often time-consuming. October is the perfect time to review the requirements for each school and build these tasks into your application plan.

4. Note early scholarships and make a scholarship plan

Scholarship season starts earlier than most students realize. Many major awards have fall deadlines, and missing them can leave thousands of dollars on the table. This month, make a list of any awards that you qualify for and map out your application strategy and timeline.

5. Attend virtual university open houses and events

Fall is a busy time for university open houses, info sessions, and faculty-specific events. These sessions are a great way to learn more about programs, ask questions, and connect with admissions teams. Whether in person or online, Options encourages students to attend as many as possible. Not sure where to start? Our team keeps track of upcoming events, so you can help prioritize the ones that matter most to you! Check out this month’s events here.

October is all about taking action, getting applications underway, keeping grades on track, and building momentum. By accomplishing these five tasks, you’ll feel more confident and prepared for the busy months ahead. And remember, team Options is here to guide you every step of the way.
