Canadian Universities Event (CUE) Recap

Every fall, the Canadian Universities Event (CUE) connects students from British Columbia with Canadian universities from across the country. This event helps students find their perfect fit in Canadian post-secondary education. This year, Team Options attended CUE, and with so many institutions unveiling new programs and exciting initiatives, we wanted to share the key highlights and most intriguing updates.

Innovative New Programs

  1. Carleton University:
    • Announced several new programs including Bachelor of Cyber Security, Bachelor of Data Science, and a fast-track Bachelor of Accounting for CPA candidates.
  2. Capilano University:
    • Two new programs: Bachelor of Environment and Society – Environmental Studies and Bachelor of Environment and Society – Environmental Science, will launch in Fall 2025. They also launched a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Literature.
  3. McMaster University:
    • Launched a groundbreaking program in Leadership and Civic Studies, integrating real-life issues and critical thinking across disciplines.
  4. Mount Royal University:
    • Introduced Alberta’s first four-year Bachelor of Data Science, alongside a new Bachelor of Aviation Management.
  5. Queen’s University:
    • Introduced a new Concurrent Education/Kinesiology program in September 2024, allowing direct entry for students interested in teaching Health and Physical Education.
  6. University of Guelph:
    • A new Bachelor of Earth Observation and Geographic Information Science aims to prepare students to track and analyze natural disasters in urban settings.

Increased Accessibility and Opportunities

  • Concordia: Every student is guaranteed to graduate with at least two experiential learning experiences in their program
  • Dalhousie University: Made significant updates to their application portal based on counsellor feedback, ensuring a smoother application process.
  • University of Calgary: With a strategic plan to increase enrollment by 10,000 students, they’re focusing on entrepreneurship and have expanded their Nursing program.
  • StFX has no Casper requirement for Nursing, making it easier for applicants to pursue their studies.

Campus Life Enhancements

  • University of Alberta: Constructing a new residence, set to open in Fall 2025, with 450 beds to accommodate the growing student population.
  • Capilano University: Opened their new residences on the Squamish campus.
  • Huron University: Opened a new residence in the fall of 202, including an art gallery and a new dining hall.

Specialized Programs and Unique Features

  • Kwantlen Polytechnic University is launching advanced programs in 3D Animation, Game Development, and VFX, catering to the growing entertainment arts sector.
  • TRU is seeking approval for a Wilfrie Studies program to begin in the Fall of 2025
  • Brock University is the only university in Canada to offer a Bachelor of Science in Applied Grape and Wine Science
