While it’s important for all students to prepare for the transition to post-secondary, this preparation is especially important for students with learning disabilities or differences. If you had an IEP in high school or you’re in the process of a psychoeducational assessment, now is a good time to think about connecting with accessibility services.
Learn about the accessibility department at your prospective school
Your first step should be to learn as much as you can about the accessibility department. Use the website to gather information about application procedures, documentation guidelines, and deadlines. Many schools offer students the chance to meet with accessibility advisors so that students can ask questions and learn about the services offered.
Start the process of applying for accommodations early
Like with any other application you’ve done this year, starting early is key! If you’re beginning your studies in September, start the process of applying for accommodations in June/July. This will ensure that by the time classes start, you already have the necessary supports in place.
Gather your documentation
Locate the necessary documentation. While this might vary from school to school, typically you must provide recent medical documentation prepared by a professional who is qualified to diagnose your specific disability or medical condition.
Understand your accommodations
The accommodations you received in high school will not automatically follow you to post-secondary, and many of these services may look different in a post-secondary environment. It’s important that you understand what works well for you and why, so you can advocate for them.
Become a self-advocate
Even though accessibility services are there to support you, be prepared for an increased level of self-advocacy. Learn how to communicate information about your strengths and challenges, and contact your accessibility team if you face any barriers regarding your accommodations.
