Here is what’s happening at Options Solutions this week:
Saturday, September 17th (South Granville)
Having the ability to express yourself clearly and expressively is essential in today’s world. All too often, however, high school students feel that their writing skills are lacking. They worry they won’t be able to handle the rigorous assignments of the university classroom or the communication tasks of their future careers. They even worry about their current classwork, often expressing doubt about their ability to write well and achieve the grades they need for college admission.
While becoming a skilled writer is definitely a process, the best way to get there is to start. Our Write Well Workshop series is designed to offer students productive ways of thinking about their writing journey and exercises to ease them into the practice of writing and editing. It’s the beginning of a new school year, the perfect time for students to polish their writing skills and start the year off on the right foot with our first session in the series: Grammar & Punctuation.
Saturday, September 17th (West Vancouver)
Our Back-to-School Study Skills Workshop is designed to help grade 8 to 10 students be academically prepared for their educational futures. The sessions are instructional as well as practical, hands-on work sessions, and they are offered at the start of the school term to help students get a start on forming solid study habits. Students will leave the workshop armed with the knowledge, skills, strategies, and reference material required to prepare them for academic success. They will also leave the workshop with a concrete study plan for one of their courses that can be used as a model to structure their study habits.
Saturday, September 17th (West Vancouver)
Writing is a process, and one that takes time! The One-Day Canadian Admissions Writing Workshop introduces students to writing components for Canadian applications. The session will include a presentation that outlines the typical essay and supplemental writing prompts required by major Canadian universities and programs (e.g. UBC, Queen’s, Western). During this presentation, session leaders will also provide writing and time management strategies and sample essays from previous years’ successful applications. Students will then be given time to brainstorm and begin writing their application essays.
