Bachelor of Public Health (University of Waterloo, Waterloo)
Have you always wanted to have a positive impact on the health of not only an individual, but entire communities, even populations, of people? With a career in public health, you can do just that!
At the University of Waterloo, students studying public health will examine the social, cultural, political, biological and geographic impacts on the health of individuals, communities, and populations. Students will also examine health system trends, behaviours, and inequalities, while also tackling related challenges, such as the advancement of real-life cigarette and vaping regulations and the benefits of using wearable technology to collect patient data.
Students can become involved with Waterloo’s co-op program throughout their degree in public health to gain valuable work experience, make contacts and earn money.
Sample co-op job titles include:
- Health and safety student officer
- Health promotions and events assistant
- Corporate events coordinator
- Residential/vocational assistant
- Health and wellness coordinator
- Rehabilitation and mental health assistant
- Junior policy analyst
- Public health analyst
Waterloo public health students enter directly into their program in their first year, taking classes ranging from the biological determinants of health, sociology of activity, health and well-being, the foundations of human anatomy and physiology, and an introduction to psychology and health data science. Upper-level courses explore social health and well-being. Students are also offered electives, where they can choose from over 100 subject areas at Waterloo. Through their electives, they may explore interests or add a minor or prerequisite course.
Hands-on experience in class is also available. Students will complete a thesis, an independent study, or a community placement, along with taking some upper-year courses in field learning.
