SAT Math: Setting your SAT goal and knowing your range

on

Setting an SAT Math goal is important to help improve your SAT math score.  To set a realistic goal, first take a diagnostic test, such as an SAT Mock/Practice Test, to determine your strengths and areas for improvement in the Math sections. The practice test scores can serve as a reference point for setting your realistic Math score goal.

In order to achieve your SAT Math goal, it is helpful to know the RANGE of Math questions that you are able to attempt.  The percentage of questions attempted, which is your range, can help you to determine your score goal. For example, if your score goal is Low 600s, then you should attempt 85% of the questions. In other words, out of the total 54 questions, you can strive to do 46 of them. This is really beneficial because you can pace yourself carefully on the test.

For many students, answering all the problems on the SAT Math would most likely prevent them from scoring their potential. If you attempted every question on the SAT with equal amount of effort, you would feel rushed and make careless mistakes. And more often than not, you would make mistakes on more difficult questions. Knowing the number of questions you should attempt means you can spend your time strategically on being accurate on these questions. However, you should keep in mind that you should aim to do enough questions to get a good score.

If you have a question range to work with, you can be more effective in your SAT Math prep to target the questions you’re likely to do well on. Having this range, in a sense, reduces the SAT to a more manageable size mentally. For test takers who are significantly affected by time pressure, they could feel more comfortable focusing on easy and medium problems and devoting less time to the difficult ones.
