Options Alumni: Liz Rose

on

We have so many stellar Options alumni, and in our new series, we wanted to shine a light on a few of our past clients who have gone on to do great things both near and far. This month, we chatted with Liz about what she’s been up to since she graduated and her advice for current post-secondary students.

What’s your name?

Liz Rose

Where and what did you study?

I studied Communications at the University of Denver (DU). During my time there, I had the opportunity to spend my entire third year abroad. For the first half, I embarked on Semester at Sea where we circumnavigated the globe exploring 11 countries. Afterwards, I spent a semester in London, England at the University of Westminster. I was very fortunate to extend my studies into an internship with the London 2012 Olympics working for NBC. After graduating from DU, I supplemented my education by attending the New York Film Academy to study broadcast journalism.

How did you choose this institution and program?

Ever since the early days of high school, I have always known I wanted to go to school in the United States. My older brothers had gone to the States, and I wanted the quintessential “American” school experience, full of big sporting events, sororities, and a fresh start where I could meet new people. My dad had gone to DU and after touring a few different campuses, I fell in love with Denver. Even while selecting a school, I still felt very unsure of what I wanted to study. I ultimately chose communications due to its versatility.

What would you tell current post-secondary students about finding a path?

I would tell current post-secondary students to be open to all new opportunities in life. Take a variety of different electives because one class or one teacher could take you down a path you never imagined yourself on.

Would your high school self be surprised with where you ended up?

My high school self would be shocked to hear about the journey my life has taken.

What are you doing now?

I am currently the youngest Canadian to have climbed the Seven Summits (referring to the highest mountain on each continent, including Mount Everest), an Amazon best-selling author, and more recently, a firefighter for the City of Richmond. How I ended up here, I really don’t know. However, I do know that I always believed in myself, and I had the courage to say, “yes”. I was never afraid to dream big.

What at Options Solutions helped you the most?

Options Solutions made my transition from high school to university seamless. They were a wealth of information, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without their guidance. Their guidance directly helped me to pass the SAT – I found the SAT Bootcamp very helpful. Learning the ins and outs of the test was a game-changer for me. When it came to applying to schools, I was confident handing in every application and essay because Options Solutions was confident in me. Well after I finished university, I was unsure what to do career-wise, and I joked to my parents that I just needed a “Melinda Appointment” to help me figure it out! I first met Melinda when I was learning how to drive -in fact, I showed up in tears to my first appointment because I was stressed trying to park the car. Now years later, I’m 32 (driving a firetruck), and I am so lucky to say I still have a relationship with MG.

A fun fact about you?

I have a Bernedoodle named Summit
