Do you ever see a product or service and think to yourself, ‘I could do this better?’ Are you always coming up with creative ideas to solve everyday problems? Does freedom and independence in a career excite you? Well then, entrepreneurship may be a great fit!
At its most basic level, ‘Entrepreneurship’ is about taking an idea and turning it into a business. Entrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes (from a 12 year old pitching their idea on Dragons Den to a 50 year old presenting a million dollar proposal to a room of CEOs). This means there is no rule book or specific path you must follow to become one. That said, if you are considering the post-secondary path, there are some awesome Canadian universities who offer entrepreneurship as a ‘major’ or ‘concentration’ that you can study. Keep reading to learn about two featured program options below:
University of Victoria (UVIC) – Bachelor of Commerce – Entrepreneurship Major
In year four of the UVIC commerce program, students can choose to specialize in Entrepreneurship, Service Management or International Business. UVIC defines entrepreneurship as the creation of new value; which could be economic, social and environmental. All students in this major have the opportunity to participate in an innovation project where they start and run a micro-venture.
McGill – Bachelor of Commerce – Entrepreneurship Concentration
Students in the McGill commerce program can choose from over ten ‘concentrations’, one of which is entrepreneurship. Students in this concentration will learn how to conceptualize, develop, launch and manage a new venture. Students will also have access to the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship which offers free entrepreneurship programs, mentorship opportunities, seed-funding competitions and access to a wide network of resources for startups.
