If you’re a university student heading to campus this fall and you struggle with time management, deadlines, or organization, then meeting one-on-one with a Writing Coach for executive functioning could be for you! Our Writing Coaches are experienced in helping university students stay on top of their studies. Especially if this is your first year of university, booking sessions throughout the term will help you build the skills and confidence you need to have a successful term.
The Initial Session

With university students, executive functioning sessions are primarily student-led. What this means is that your Writing Coach will spend the first session going through your syllabi with you, asking you questions about your organization, discussing scheduling strategies, and gaining a sense of what tools you already have in place. This initial session will also highlight the areas that need improvement. Your Writing Coach will show you several scheduling tools and resources, and you can decide which ones seem like a good fit. Together, you and your Writing Coach will brainstorm how to best use these sessions to maximize productivity and help you stay organized.
Subsequent Weekly (or Bi-Weekly) Sessions

Many students decide to use their University Executive Functioning sessions as an hour each week to update their schedule, check upcoming deadlines, create a weekly study plan, and check in about how things went in the last week. University students are often juggling four or five courses—each with its own readings, assignments, midterms, and finals—and the added stresses of living away from home. Students now have to factor in things like laundry, social time, meals, calling home, etc. Sessions are adaptable; I often say to students that we can use the hour in whatever way they feel will be most productive. Sometimes, this looks like doing the scheduling quickly so that the student can get to work on their essay. Other times, it might be helpful to spend the full hour talking through how to study for a final exam. Having another person keeping you accountable can be extremely helpful for developing new habits.
We recommend that you start seeing a Writing Coach early in September—the start of term is when we see the most missed assignments because students are still finding their footing. It’s better to book more sessions and cancel them later than to not have enough!
