Nervous for First-Year University English? Build confidence with Intro to University Level Writing
The transition from high school to university can be overwhelming for many first-year students! There are lots of new things to get used to: doing your own laundry, being away from home, managing your own schedule, and taking more difficult courses. First-year English courses—a requirement for most majors—can be daunting. This summer, we are offering our Intro to University Level Writing workshop to help ease that transition and give students the confidence they need to succeed!
Practice Locating Academic Articles
One of the big differences between high school and university is that students will be expected to conduct their own research and find peer-reviewed, credible, academic sources on their own. This course gives students the tools they need to be able to identify a reliable source and to conduct individual research on a topic.
Create Annotated Bibliographies and Summaries
In university, students will often be asked to read many articles per week. It can be challenging to keep all of this reading organized. Writing summaries of each reading is a fantastic study tool, and this course gives students the opportunity to practice this skill. In addition, students will practice creating annotated bibliographies, which is another important English skill.
Write a Research Paper
Most importantly, Intro to University Level Writing asks students to practice actually writing a research paper. While many students will have completed some sort of research paper in high school, there is a different expectation in university, and this course prepares students for that new level of detail, expertise, and critical thought. Students will have lots of choice in their research topic, so hopefully, they’ll learn something new about a topic they are interested in!
Revise your Work
Developing skills for revising one’s written work is hugely important in university. This course devotes time to discussing various strategies for revision and gives students the chance to put them into practice.
We’re running Intro to University Level Writing three times this summer! Select the dates that work best for you and register today! The course will run July 11-14, August 8-11, and August 15-18.
