5 Ways to Start the School Year Strong

on

It’s that time of year again, and we want to help you make the most of it! Starting the school year off right can ensure you will gain the necessary momentum to stay on track this year and finish with success.

Get Back Into a Good Sleeping Routine

For those of us who like to sleep in, getting on an earlier schedule can be a tricky transition – especially if you aren’t going to bed until the wee hours of the morning! Nonetheless, getting a good night’s sleep is essential for your body and brain to feel their very best. If you’re not already getting eight to ten hours of sleep, start by cutting your bedtime back by 15-20 minutes every night to let your body adjust. Slow and steady wins the race!

Regulate Your Screen Time

You’ve heard it before, but this one’s important! As we progress into an increasingly virtual world, it is paramount to your physical and mental health that you monitor how much time you’re spending on your phone, computer, or TV. Not only can the blue light from digital screens negatively affect your vision, sleep patterns, and body, but it can also lead to poorer test performance in school. Rather than ending your day by watching Netflix or scrolling through social media, pick up a book, call a friend, or play some non-digital games with your family!

Get an Alarm Clock

As we transition away from summer sleep-ins and into early mornings, your circadian rhythm will need some time to adjust. Having an alarm clock can be a lifesaver in ensuring that you stick to your schedule and don’t sleep through your classes. And, if you’re all too familiar with the snooze button, put your alarm clock on the other side of the room before you go to bed. Having to stand up and walk around in order to turn off the sound is a surefire way to get you going in the morning!

Prepare for School the Night Before

What’s worse than getting ready to walk out the door and, at the last minute, realizing that you didn’t pack your bag or prepare your lunch for the day? Do your future self a favor and get these tasks done before you go to bed. Put together the binders, textbooks, and homework you will need and pack up some food that will fuel your brain mid-way through the day. Your tired and groggy morning self will thank you!

Get Organized

Whether you like to color coordinate, build a schedule, write down your deadlines, or something else entirely – do what works for you to get organized now before the heavy rush of homework and exams comes in. Staying on top of your schoolwork is vital for having a successful and manageable year, and it is much easier to start now than to try and catch up in exam season!
