University of Toronto – A Network of Communities

The University of Toronto Information Session held Saturday, April 22nd at the Westin Bayshore provided an overview of the three University of Toronto (U of T) campuses, the many programs on offer, and the exciting extra-curricular activities and career support available at the university. Following the presentation, faculty representatives provided program-specific information and responded to many questions from prospective students, parents, and counsellors.

The University of Toronto is the largest university in Canada with 84,000 students across campuses in three locations – the St. George’s campus, the Mississauga campus, and the Scarborough campus.

U of T St. George Campus – situated in Toronto’s downtown core, is the largest and oldest campus. 40,000+ students attend this campus.

Learning Communities at St. Georges Campus:

  • Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.
  • John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.
  • Faculty of Music.
  • Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education.
  • Faculty of Arts and Science – (700+ programs including computer science, humanities, social sciences, life sciences, physical & mathematical Sciences, and Rotman Commerce.

Residence is guaranteed to all new full-time students entering their first year of a postsecondary program. 

U of T Mississauga Campus – situated west of Toronto, UTM is a modern enclosed campus. It is home to 14,000+ students.

  • Life Sciences.
  • Forensic Science – (first-of-its-kind program).
  • Psychology (HBSc only).
  • Communication, Culture, Information & Technology.
  • Visual Studies, Theatre and Drama.

Residence is guaranteed to all new full-time students entering their first year of a postsecondary program.  There are eight student residence complexes.

U of T Scarborough Campus – located in the eastern suburbs of Toronto, UTSC hosts 13,000+ students, and the soon-to-be-completed Indigenous House.

Residence is guaranteed to all new full-time students entering their first year of a postsecondary program.  Student residence comprises suite-style apartment and townhouse options.

Admissions Facts:

  • Apply through Ontario Application Centre (OUAC).  
  • Early applications are encouraged as admissions are competitive and spaces fill quickly. Applications are reviewed in rounds, so submit applications and supporting documentation well in advance of the deadlines.   
  • Students are permitted to select three programs from the 5 faculties at St. Georges Campus or one program from each campus – St, George, Mississauga, and Scarborough.
  • Students need to select their college when they apply.
  • The admission selection process includes consideration of Grade 11 and Grade 12 academic records. Emphasis is placed on Grade 11 results where marks in the required number of Grade 12 courses are not yet available.
  • The U of T reserves the right to give preference to students with a consistent academic record whose marks are the result of a single attempt at each course.
  • There is no advantage to taking IB or AP curriculum for admission purposes.

Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering

The Admissions Committee considers a candidate’s overall academic history with an emphasis on the prerequisite course average. All applicants are required to submit an Online Student Profile.

There are three admissions pathways: Track One – undeclared 1st year, Engineering Science, or Core Direct Entry Programs. Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Engineering Science are the most competitive programs.

Co-op is available for all programs.

Faculty of Arts and Science

Programs:

  • Calculus will be included in the admissions average for Computer Science; Life Sciences; Physical & Mathematical Sciences; and Rotman Commerce.
  • Computer Science (HBsc ) – requires a supplemental application.
  • Rotman Commerce (BCom) – requires a supplemental application.
  • The faculty of Arts and Science contains a vast array of programs, and students are easily able to combine interdisciplinary areas of interest.
Rotman Commerce (BCom):

A video interview process, including timed writing, encourages students to be authentic and bring fresh perspectives.
90% of Rotman students advance to 2nd year.
Specialist options: Management, Finance and Economics, Accounting.
As part of the Arts and Science Faculty, students have access to 100’s of courses to enrich their BCom degree.
Rotman Career Services provides career support and networking event.

Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education (BKIN)

  • All applicants must complete an online Statement of Interest form.
  • KPE students can participate in two certificate programs: Global Kinesiology and Physical Education, and Physical Activity Instruction.
  • A combined Master of Teaching (MT) program from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education is also available.

John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design

  • Students can pursue degrees in Architectural Studies and Visual Studies.
  • All applicants are required to complete the One Idea supplementary application. Applicants may also submit a portfolio.
  • Both professions of Architecture and Landscape Architecture require a graduate degree at the master’s level.

Faculty of Music  

  • Students can pursue studies in performance, composition, history and theory or music education.
  • All applicants are required to submit a Music Questionnaire. An audition/interview is required as part of the application process.
  • Classical applicants have the option of taking the Classical Faculty of Music Entrance Theory Exam.
  • All Jazz applicants will be required to write the Faculty of Music Jazz Entrance Theory Exam.

Scholarships

  • The university and its colleges and faculties award 5,700+ admissions scholarships that total $35 million each year plus 6,000 in-course scholarships.
  • U of T Scholars Program recognizes outstanding students. All students are assessed automatically for these scholarships based on their academic performance.
  • National Scholarship Program – approximately 15 students are named National Scholars and ten are named Arbor Scholars. This scholarship requires a separate application.
