UVic Update: What happens after you apply?

on

At a recent UVic Spring Counsellor’s meeting, Edwin Liew from Options Solutions found out some key information on the follow-up process after applying to UVic for Fall 2012 admission, including self reporting of marks, entrance scholarships, housing and accommodation and important dates to keep in mind. If you applied to UVic well before the early admissions deadline of February 28th, you should have received a confirmation notice informing you of your application status and the follow-up steps to take. If you haven’t submitted an application, there is still time as UVic has, in addition to February 28, the two other deadlines for various programs from Music to Science to Pre-Social Work: March 31st and May 15th.

Self-reporting:

The period for Phase 1 Self-reporting (SR 1) opened from October 1 – November 30th for Final Grade 11 courses and marks. Based on the 5 Grade 11 approved subjects, UVic would have given you a conditional offer of admission. Clear requirements in a letter of conditional offer are sent to you, which would outline a minimum percentage average to be maintained on final grades on grade 12 subjects. Applicants who have self-reported in Phase 1 must also self-report in Phase 2, which serves the dual purpose of being an application for a grade-based entrance scholarship, for which the interim/predicted grades are considered. Self-reporting Phase 2 (SR 2) runs from February 1st to March 31st for applicants to report their Final Grade 11 marks and (4) Grade 12 subject interim/predicted grades.

Entrance Scholarships

The Entrance Scholarships Program opened on February 1st and students need to self-report their Grade 12 marks in Self-reporting Phase 2 to be considered for any grade-based entrance scholarships. Applicants with GPA of 85% and higher could receive from $1,000 up to $6,500 per year (total of $26,000 over four years). In order to maintain this, a student will need to take a minimum of 4 courses per term from Year 1 onwards. For IB students, a minimum of 32 points (without core points) will get you $2,000 and up to $6,500 per year. In addition, a $1,000 “come to campus travel grant” is given to students who achieve 90% or above on their admission average.

Application to Specific criteria entrance scholarships, which require the submission of additional documentation, can be completed online between February 1st and May 15th. All documents for evaluation must be mailed to Student Awards & Financial Aid office by May 15th.

On-Campus Residence

Most of the residences offer single-room accommodation and double-room housing are available upon request. These standard residences include meal plans. For 2012-2013, students are able to choose theme-based communities in residence ranging from Leadership and Civic Engagement community, Health and Wellness, Sustainability, Academic Engagement, Substance Free to Quiet Floors. Whether you prefer to find academic solace in a dorm with an interdisciplinary mix, a no-alcohol or substance zone, or an eco-friendly, carbon-reducing living environment to balance your campus life, UVic’s residence with its new dieticians are ready to serve you. Additionally, UVic’s new 106-bed residence tower is now complete and open for occupancy.

New Programs:

There will be two new programs starting Fall 2012: A Bachelor of Health and Community Services program which admits in 3rd year (Sept. entrance only), offering studies in nutrition, health and wellness and gerontology and the new 5-year Biomedical Engineering major’s in its final stages of approval and will soon be added to the Bachelor of Engineering program.
