Why Take Provincial Exam Prep?

on

In a few months, students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 will take their Provincial exams. These exams are important: all exams count for 20% of a student’s final mark, except for English 12, which counts for a whopping 40%! For success on exam day, you’ll need to prepare. While the exams do reflect the academic curriculum, there are many reasons why investing in prep is a good idea.

  1. Prep guarantees that you’ve learned all the essential skills and knowledge.

Our instructors have encountered students who have spent months preparing for the Provincial in class and others who have no idea what to expect; most students fall somewhere in-between these two extremes. Attending a Provincial prep session or two will ensure you haven’t missed anything; it also functions as a great review for what you’re already learned.

  2. Prep teaches you test-taking strategies.
Learning the material is one thing; knowing how to strategically read passages, tackle questions, and eliminate answers is another thing entirely. At Options Solutions, we encourage students to be active test-takers. This means having a firm understanding of the genre of exam you will be writing (structure and content), employing smart test-taking strategies and time management, and strengthening your knowledge base.

  3. We’ve seen it all.

As instructors, we’ve seen years of past exams. We can tell you which literary terms appear the most often, identify the types of passages, examples, and questions you’ll see, and give you tried-and-true approaches to each section of your math, science, and English exams.

  4. Nothing is as effective as practice, practice, and more practice.

This article discusses the benefits of test-taking as part of the studying process. Although many students prefer to study up until the test itself, a study has shown that being tested shortly after studying allows students to retain more information. You may think you understand the material, but it’s only through hands-on practice that you’ll know for sure. Depending on which Provincial prep session you choose, you’ll practice solving math questions, actively reading science questions and English passages, analyzing poetry, drafting essay outlines, and writing different essay types.
