Honours Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Data Science↗ – York University (Toronto, Ontario)
As artificial intelligence and data grow in global importance, universities and colleges across the country are launching undergraduate programs to prepare the next generation of data scientists to make sense of our rapidly changing world.
York University’s Data Science major can be completed as either an Arts or a Science degree, making it versatile and attractive for students from both disciplines. While rooted in mathematics and statistics, this field trains students to use computational and statistical reasoning to generate insights and meaning from data: “It has emerged as a key competence for any organization, including both businesses and governments.”
York’s program provides educational training and hands-on experience for students looking to work within one of their streams of business, health, or computational arts (digital media), and the program culminates with a fourth year capstone project that puts students into real-world, industrial settings to engage in research with data and solve problems.
The program was designed by industry professionals to provide training in both computer science and statistics – including courses in computer programming, communications, data visualization, data structures, machine learning, data analytics, ethics, and more. Students can go beyond the major to explore their further interests across the faculties of Arts or Sciences, depending on their preference.
Whether the goal is a career in business, healthcare, or the creative arts, a strong background in data science will make graduates an integral part of the team within any of these industries.
